Dear Engineer, Its our Day ....

Now in 2013 numbers of Engineers are rising in various branches. Today India produces maximum engineers in the world who have done wonders in field of technology and have played a major role in the development and growth of our nation leaving an impact through their discipline. But it’s sad to say that Engineers doesn't have much knowledge about their day. If we ask the date of celebrations to Engineering students, the question may kill them by asking…Engineers Day, what?? we don’t hear etc etc. We can’t find any fault in these Engineering students behaviour because a most percentage of colleges never celebrate this occasion. So talented students are unaware of this celebration. Many movies like ‘3 idiots’ in Bollywood and in Hollywood ‘God must be crazy’ are based on engineer’s life but none of the movie also includes the celebration or even the knowledge about engineer’s day.

Engineers' Day is celebrated on 15 September every year. The day is the birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya (known as Sir M.V.), an eminent Indian engineer (from College Of Eng.’s., Pune (COEP)) and statesman born on present day in Karnataka. He served as the chief designer of the flood protection system designed and built for the city of Hyderabad, as well as the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raj Sagar dam on river Kaveri in Mysore which created the largest reservoir in Asia at that time. He also designed and patented a system of automatic weir water floodgates that were first installed in 1903 at the Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune. He also built many dams in the Bombay presidency (present day Maharashtra). The dams built by him are still functional even today, a testimony to his brilliance, skill, honesty and dedication. A recipient of India's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955, he was knighted as a Commander of the British Indian Empire by King George V before Independence. He died on April 14, 1962. Engineer's Day 2013, is quite a remarkable tribute to the greatest Indian Engineer Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvarayya.

Now lakhs of Engineering graduates coming out every year from various parts of the country. Colleges should celebrate this day with seminars about past to present scenario in Indian Engineering. Engineers Day should be a day in which all zester minds in Engineering sector should be treated with zealous by the authorities. Other ways this day will be disappear from history as time passes.

What we engineers are actually????
Engineers participate in the activities which make the resources of nature available in a form beneficial to man and provide systems which will perform optimally and economically. Engineer builds the world (Civil), creates the magic (CS/IT), moves the world (Mech/Auto), gives power to the world (EEE) and connects the world and make it smaller (EC/TC)...We are the World and it's creators because Scientists Invent d world that already exists...But ENGINEERS create d world that never existed... Engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopaedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practicing the art of the organized forcing of technological change... Engineers operate at the interface between science and society. The ideal engineer is composite … He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems and this is why I think engineering is important and relevant today.

Apart from India, other several countries celebrate Engineer's Day on different day, out of which few are listed below.
  • Argentina - June 15, (not to be confused with "Argentina's engineering day" which is on June 6). The reason for this date is in 1870 Luis Augusto Huergo became the first Engineer in Argentina.
  • Belgium - March 20.
  • Canada - June 14.
  • Colombia - August 17.
  • Chile - May 14.
  • Iran - 24 February, to respect Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, Iranian great scientist.
  • Ireland on March 1
  • Italy - on 15 June.
  • Mexico - July 1.
  • Nepal - 18th July (Shravan 3rd).
  • Dutch (Netherlands) - 3rd Wednesday of March
  • Pakistan - 10th of January, on this day Pakistan Engineering Council came into being for the regulation of engineering profession and education in Pakistan.
  • Romania - September 14.
  • Taiwan - June 6.
  • United States - June 4. However, in some regions it has recently been expanded in order to properly reflect on and appreciate the hard work involved in such a difficult and demanding vocation. In 1935 in the United States, Engineer's Day was celebrated on March 15.

we design,
we construct,
we observe,
we initiate,
we drive,
we move,
we accelerate the world,
we are the gears of progress,
we are the future of the nation,
we are the engineers,
and I am proud to be an engineer.
 HAPPY ENGINEERING DAY ....

  5. Yes.. I agree with. Engineering day is not celebrated the way it should be. The way it is celebrated is B A D.. In reality it is the way it is celebrated has left no interest for the people about Engineering.

In this regard, I am trying to innovate the way Sep 15 can be celebrated.. Here is my attempt.. Please visit the event page of mine on FB. https://www.facebook.com/events/610087649080362/

I am a professor at NITIE. and I design action oriented learning events for the benefit of students. I wish to have your suggestions.

  6. I agree with .. Engineers day is not celebrated the way it should be . The event has lost its relevance due to the fact that it is not innovative. There is need to innnovate the event. so that everybody likes and understands what is all engineering ..

I am working on this. See my attempt .. Visit my FB page.. https://www.facebook.com/events/610087649080362/

    I invite your comments
